Yesterday morning, we arrived at the hospital at 9:00 for Tanner's 10:30 surgery. We got checked in and were moved to a private room to get hooked up to the IV, etc. The poor nurse-she went to put the IV in Tanner's hand and Tanner flinched at the wrong time and the nurse missed the vein. She had to pull out and go for one in the arm. Love hear heart, Tanner just cried. :(
Dr Johnson came in and answered all the questions we had. I just love Dr. Johnson and have since we first saw her. She just seems to really know her stuff and is confident in her abilities without being cocky. She explained to us what was going to happen, that she was going to use the least invasive procedure that she could first and wouldn't go any further than necessary. Next the Anesthesiologist came in and explained what he was going to do. Mike asked a question or two and they were answered.
Tanner heard all of this and was getting quiet on us. I know she was just getting scared. And really, who could blame her??? They came to give her some Versaid (to relax her) and take her to the OR and she wigged out a bit. She cried "Momma, don't let them do this!" or "I don't want to do this!" Oh it broke my heart. I just kept reassuring her that it was ok and that they were going to take good care of her. She didn't buy it and just kept crying. Thankfully the Versaid kicked in by time they actually wheeled her into the OR so that was good.
This was Tanner's fifth surgery. You'd think I'd be a pro at sending her off to the OR and I'd shed no tears. Yea, not the case. I held it together until she was out of it and then I lost it. There's nothing like seeing your kiddo being wheeled off by some stranger into some cold, sterile operating room. Oh my heart hurt, despite knowing that we were doing the right thing.
The surgery lasted about and hour and a half, but was successful. It ended up being more in depth than the Dr originally thought, which means a longer, more painful recovery. She (the Dr) ended up having to shave some of the bones of the turbinates instead of just poking a hole in the soft tissue. She said T's turbinates were "huge" and were made up of mostly bones, not soft tissue. She also opened the maxillary sinus cavities. The right one thought was red and inflamed, though not infected. Dr Johnson said it was obvious that the cavity hadn't had any air in there in awhile. So she had to scrape and irrigate that as well.
Tanner came out of the anesthesia well this time. No tears, just asking for her Momma and her glasses. :)
We've been home 24 hours now and she's doing pretty good. She's sore and swollen today and very tired. She can breathe out of one nostril, which seems to just thrill her to death. On day three of post op, we start back in on the sinus rinses and we return to the Dr on Wednesday.
Thank you for all the prayers and kind words of encouragement yesterday. I know they made a big difference in how the day went!
