Today we went back to Dr. Powell for Tanner's post-op appointment.
He said Tanner's knee is healing well and showed us pictures of her plica before, during and after the surgery. She's pretty proud because both Dr. Powell and his nurse told her she had "the biggest plica band in America." Ha! On the pictures, it was huge! He said she was probably born that way and the combination of her dancing and it popping, plus the repetitive up and down motion when she played catcher, caused the band to get stuck between the knee cap and the femur (I think!). That's why she couldn't bend her leg anymore than 78 degrees-the plica band was pinched and wouldn't allow for anymore movement.
He told Tanner "You were definitely NOT faking this, girl!"
We continue with PT for three more weeks, then see the nurse and we should be released at that time. PT is going great and she's making fabulous progress.
We waited for almost two hours to see Dr. Powell. While I was irritated to begin with, after we left, I got to thinking about it and in the grand scheme of things, two hours isn't a huge deal. At least he fixed the problem and he fixed the problem well! At least he said Tanner wasn't faking and validated that she was in pain and that it wasn't just in her head or whatever. At least he freaking put his hands on her and examined her (unlike the first Ortho we went to) and was able to figure out the problem right then and there!
In looking back, waiting two hours really isn't a huge thing compared to the nine weeks it took to fix the problem in the first place. At least it got fixed-that's all that matters.
Thanks Dr. Powell!!
