Have you ever made homemade donuts? Oh my word, they are so stinking good! I remember my mom making them when we were kids. We didn't get them often, but when she did make them-oh yea, we thought she was the best! (And of course now that we are adults, we know our mom's the best!)
Several years ago, I showed Tanner how to make the donuts. She loved them and it's since become something that we do every now and then. When my grandmother passed away, the one thing I wanted was her biscuit/donut cutter. We now use that to cut out the center of the donuts.
Making homemade donuts is easy. Buy a can (or a four pack of cans) of cheap, Wal-Mart brand, biscuits. Flatten the biscuits. Cut out the center of each biscuit. Meanwhile heat some Crisco in a deep pan. Make sure you have about three inches of Crisco in your pan. Drop the donut holes and donuts in the Crisco and fry until golden on both sides.
We have covered them in cinnamon & sugar, powdered sugar, and a powdered sugar glaze (consisting of powdered sugar, a little bit of vanilla, a pinch of salt and enough milk to bring it to the desired consistency). You could also frost them with chocolate frosting. There are lots of different options.
I think for me, the best part about it is cooking with Tanner. She puts on her apron and gets in there and "makes" the donuts, while I'm in charge of frying them. When they are cool enough to dip, she is in charge of the dipping process.
Homemade donuts are simple, easy, cheap and a great way to spend time in the kitchen with your kids. Try it sometime-I bet you'll all love them!
