Yesterday was a pretty good day. No throwing up, so that was good. Steve got up a few times and sat in the chair for at least an hour each time. He slept most of the afternoon, but that was ok, I think he needed it.
Our friend Amy brought over some homemade waffles and they have been a lifesaver. First of all they make a great dinner! Second of all, I don't have to fix breakfast! Yesterday morning I pulled a couple of the bag, popped them in the toaster and that's what Steve had for breakfast. It was perfect-not too heavy and yet filling at the same time. I fixed me some with strawberries and whipped cream and those were heaven as well-THANKS AMY!!
One of the guys that we work with, Kevin, brought over some Ensure and some Boost for Steve to try drinking. Kevin used to be my Sgt. and he and I quickly became great friends. He and Steve grew up together so they are close as well. When I was talking to Kevin Wednesday night, he was telling me about how he drinks Ensure as a meal and it has helped his tummy and his weight loss. He said you get all the nutrients that you need without eating a heavy meal. He suggested Steve try taking his medicine with something like that, so he brought some over for Steve to try. He also suggested having Steve drink out of a cup or a water bottle instead of drinking out of the huge mug the hospital gave him. That way Steve can feel like he's making progress when drinking instead of drinking a lot and the mug still being half full. So we tried that as well yesterday and it worked great. I think total Steve drank three bottles of water, which was far more than he'd drank the two days before.
We got him in the shower last night for the first time since being home. It went ok. It was a little painful, but I think once he got in and got sat down in the shower chair, it ended up being really relaxing and nice.
This morning after Steve drank his Boost and took his medicine, we went out and walked halfway up the street. We took it slow and you could tell that it was painful for him to do, but he really did do great. I think we're going to try walking again this afternoon.
Today is one week post-op. Although it's easy to get frustrated and sometimes it feels like we're not making any progress, I know all in all, we are. We're taking baby steps and that's ok. The Dr told us that the first two weeks are the roughest and we've already made it through week one.
I have a Dr appt this afternoon to find out the results of my IVP from last week. Kevin is coming over to stay with Steve while I'm gone. I'm sure Steve will just sleep the whole time, but at least someone will be here in case he needs to get up or something.
More later.......................

Wow, the rest of us are saying, "it's already been a week?" I bet this week has just crawled by for you! I think focusing on the small progress is key, not expecting anything too big! It's crazy how fast we expect ourselves to heal!
